Chicago Elementary Teacher Lucy Martinez FIRED After Viral Video Shows Her Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Assassination During “No Kings” Protest — District Faces Fierce Backlash

A Chicago elementary school teacher has been fired after a viral video surfaced showing her allegedly mocking the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk, sparking widespread outrage and forcing the district to shut down parts of its online presence amid security concerns.

The teacher, identified as Lucy Martinez, had been employed at Nathan Hale Elementary School in the Chicago Public Schools district.

In the 15-second clip — which quickly spread across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok — Martinez can be seen holding a protest sign reading “No Kings” and laughing as a nearby speaker references Kirk’s death.

“Guess he finally found out what happens when you mess with the crown!” she is heard saying, followed by laughter.

The remark — perceived as mocking or celebrating the assassination — triggered an immediate online firestorm.

Outrage Across the Country

Within hours, hashtags like #FireLucyMartinez and #NoKingsProtest began trending nationwide.

Political figures from both parties condemned the behavior, calling it “disgraceful,” “inhuman,” and “unfit for any classroom.”

Conservative commentator Candace Owens called the video “a new low in public education.”

“Mocking the death of anyone — no matter what you believe — is morally bankrupt,” she posted on X.

Dozens of parents flooded Nathan Hale Elementary’s Facebook and Google pages with furious reviews and demands for her removal.

By late evening, both the school’s website and public review pages had been taken offline.

District Responds: “Zero Tolerance”

Early this morning, Chicago Public Schools issued an official statement confirming Martinez’s termination.

“CPS upholds a strict code of ethics and professionalism for all staff members,” the statement read.

“The actions and words captured in the recent viral video do not reflect the values of our district, our educators, or our city. Ms. Martinez is no longer employed by Chicago Public Schools.”

The district added that counseling and communications staff had been made available to students and parents “to address concerns arising from the incident.”

Local police have also confirmed they are “aware of the online reaction” and monitoring the situation to prevent harassment or threats toward the school community.

The Viral Clip That Changed Everything

The video, filmed during a “No Kings” protest in downtown Chicago, appears to have been posted by a bystander before spreading rapidly across social media.

In the clip, demonstrators chant anti-establishment slogans, while one speaker references Charlie Kirk’s assassination — a topic that has deeply divided the nation.

When Martinez is seen smirking and delivering her line, the crowd laughs — but moments later, someone nearby says, “That’s too far.”

By the time the clip hit national media, her name and workplace had already been identified by online users.

“I didn’t mean harm. It was a poor choice of words,” Martinez reportedly told a local journalist before her account was deleted. “I was emotional, caught in the moment.”

Her apology, however, came too late to stop the avalanche of backlash.

Parents, Politicians, and Protest

Outside Nathan Hale Elementary, a small group of parents gathered Friday morning holding signs reading “Protect Our Kids” and “Keep Politics Out of Classrooms.”

Parent Angela Torres told reporters:

“We trust teachers to model empathy and respect. What my child saw online broke that trust. I’m glad the district acted fast.”

Local Alderman Rafael Castillo praised the school’s decision, calling it “a necessary step to restore community confidence.”

Meanwhile, teacher union representatives expressed concern over the speed of the termination, urging the district to ensure due process even in viral incidents.

“Social media can destroy a career in hours,” one union spokesperson said. “We support accountability, but we also ask for fairness.”

Broader Debate: Speech vs. Standards

The incident has reignited a national conversation about the boundaries of personal expression and professional responsibility — especially for educators.

First Amendment experts note that while teachers have the right to free speech, public employees are held to higher standards of conduct.

“When speech crosses into cruelty or public ridicule of tragedy, it ceases to be private opinion — it becomes a matter of character and fitness,” said constitutional lawyer Dr. Evelyn Harper.

A Cautionary Tale

For Chicago Public Schools, the episode underscores how fast outrage can escalate — and how thin the line is between personal belief and public consequence.

In a brief follow-up, CPS officials said they are reviewing digital training protocols for staff to help prevent similar incidents.

“In today’s world, a few seconds of bad judgment can undo a lifetime of good work,” one administrator said anonymously.

As for Lucy Martinez, her accounts remain deleted, and her future uncertain.

The school reopened its website late Friday — but with comments disabled.

And in classrooms across Chicago, teachers began the day with a quiet reminder:

Words matter.

Even the ones said with a laugh.
