WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amid a deepening government shutdown that has left millions of Americans facing uncertainty, House Speaker Mike Johnson took to the floor on Tuesday to defend Republican efforts to reopen the government and deliver relief to those hardest hit by the stalemate.
In a speech that blended empathy with defiance, Johnson portrayed the GOP as the party “fighting and voting every day” for ordinary citizens — especially those feeling the economic pain of the shutdown.
“People everywhere can see clearly who’s fighting and voting here every day, and delivering for them,” Johnson declared, his tone resolute. “To every hardworking American, in any place, who’s missed a paycheck — anyone who has been made to suffer because the health service you rely upon or the food and nutrition supplement for your family [is disrupted] — anyone who is hurting, you have a home in the Republican Party.”
Johnson’s remarks came as federal workers, healthcare recipients, and families dependent on food assistance programs continue to grapple with the effects of the government’s partial closure, now in its fifth week.
The shutdown began after a budget standoff over the extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies and funding levels for social programs.
